Dr Douglass Wheen

Dr Wheen is a highly experienced Australian-trained sub-specialist Hand Surgeon, who has practised Hand and Wrist Surgery exclusively for over 20 years. He has training and experience in all aspects of acute and reconstructive Hand and Wrist Surgery including Fracture and Trauma Surgery, Nerve Surgery, Tendon Transfer Surgery, Microvascular and free Flap Surgery, and Surgery for degenerative conditions such as arthritis. His practice is based at the Centre for Hand Surgery in Sydney, and he is an accredited hand surgeon at St Luke’s Hospital, Sydney.

Dr Wheen treats all common elective hand conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger digit, and ganglions; as well as hand injuries, hand fractures, tendon and nerve lacerations and complex reconstructive cases. He has a large practice in the surgical treatment of Dupuytren’s disease and contracture. He is also accredited to prescribe and administer Xiaflex (collagenase) injections for the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture, and has been using that for appropriate cases since early 2014, with quite pleasing results

His qualifications are MB BS (Hons), University of Sydney 1983 and FRACS 1990. He undertook subspecialist Hand Surgery Fellowships at the St Luke’s Hospital Hand Unit in Sydney (1992 and 1994), The Royal North Shore Hospital Hand and Peripheral Nerve surgery Unit in Sydney (1993), and The Christine Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery, Louisville, Kentucky (1995).

He is a member of the Australian Hand Surgery Society, the New South Wales Hand Surgery Association and the Australian Medical Association. Doug is currently also a Board member and Treasurer of the Australian Hand Surgery Society, and has previously been both President and Secretary of the New South Wales Hand Surgery Association.
