Dr Douglass Wheen

Dr Wheen has published internationally on topics such as glomus tumours, scaphoid fractures, tendon grafts and rheumatoid arthritis in the hand, and has contributed chapters to several textbooks of Hand Surgery and Hand Therapy. He has regularly delivered scientific papers at state, national and international hand surgery conferences. He is a past Director of both the Sydney Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital Hand Units.

He has undertaken reconstructive hand surgery and teaching in Indonesia, Vietnam and New Guinea, the latter trips being sponsored by Interplast Australia.

He was a VMO hand surgeon at the Sydney Hospital Hand Unit from 1994 to 2012. He is the immediate past Director of both the Sydney and St Luke’s Hospital Hand Units.

His major mentors in Hand Surgery have been A/Prof W B Conolly, Prof M Tonkin, Dr T Herbert, Dr H Kleinert and Dr L Scheker.

Outside of hand surgery, Doug is a Christian, a father and he enjoys cycling, bushwalking and canyoning.
